NTPC is India’s largest power utility with an installed capacity of 73,024  MW (including JVs) and plans to become a 130 GW company by 2032. Established in 1975, NTPC aims to be the world’s largest and best power major.

Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi established the business as National Thermal Power Corporation Private Limited on November 7, 1975. It began constructing its first thermal power plant in 1976 in Shaktinagar, Uttar Pradesh, under the name National Thermal Power Corporation Private Limited Singrauli. Its name was changed to “National Thermal Power Corporation Limited” in the same year. NTPC started doing business in 1983 and reported INR 4.5 crores in earnings for the fiscal year ending in 1983. It has a 2000 MW power generating capacity by the end of 1985.
It finished synchronizing its first 500 MW unit in Singrauli in 1986. It put into service two 500 MW units in 1988, one at Rihand and the other in Ramagundam. It launched a consulting segment in 1989. In 1992, The Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station was purchased from the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam. Its installed capacity exceeded 15,000 MW by the end of 1994.

The Orissa State Electricity Board relinquished control of the Talcher Thermal Power Station to it in 1995. The Indian government granted it “Navratna” status in 1997. It reached a significant milestone by producing 100 billion units of power in that same year. It put into service its first 350 MW naphtha-based plant in Kayamkulam in 1998. Its Dadri factory, which had the highest plant load factor (PLF) in India at 96%, received ISO-14001 certification in 1999. It began constructing its first 800-MW hydroelectric power plant in Himachal Pradesh around the year 2000.
It established three subsidiary firms in 2002: NTPC Electric Supply Company Limited for forward integration by starting a distribution business;

NTPC Hydro Limited is responsible for carrying out the business of developing and managing small and medium hydropower projects. NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited is responsible for addressing the anticipated increase in energy trading. Its installed capacity exceeded 20,000 MW later in 2002.

On November 5, 2004, NTPC was listed on both the BSE and NSE. On the first day of listing, it ended at $75.55 per share compared to the issue price of 62. In terms of market capitalization, it rose to the third-largest corporation in India on the day of the IPO.
