Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS) conducts physiological and biomedical research to improve human performance in extreme and wartime environments.

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in India operates the Defense Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS) as a defense facility. It is based in Delhi and carries out physiological and biological studies to enhance human performance in hazardous and combat situations. The DRDO’s Life Sciences Directorate is where DIPAS is organized.

At the Defence Science Laboratory in Delhi, a small group of scientists and medical physiologists started conducting research on military physiology in 1950. A fully functional laboratory with a focus on high altitude physiology, nutrition, and biochemistry of humans in environments of extreme stress as well as ergonomic evaluation of workstations and man-machine interaction was developed in 1962.DIPAS was formally founded on September 20, 1962. The laboratory was moved inside the walls of the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment in 1968. The lab was moved to its current permanent location at Lucknow Road, Timarpur, Delhi, in 1993. From December 1, 2010, to November 30, 2016, Dr. Shashi Bala Singh, DS & DG (LS), served as Director of DIPAS. From December 1, 2016, to August 31, 2020, Dr. Bhuvnesh Kumar, OS, served as Director of DIPAS. Since September 1st, 2020, Dr. Rajeev Varshney, Sc. G., has been the Director of DIPAS.
