BSF History
Sardar Post, Chhar Bet, and Beria Bet were assaulted by Pakistan on April 9th, 1965 in Kutch. The Government of India recognised the necessity for a specialised, centrally controlled Border Security Force that would be equipped and trained to man the International Border with Pakistan as a result of this exposing the inadequacies of the State Armed Police to deal with armed aggression. The Border Security Force was established on December 1st, 1965, as a consequence of the Committee of Secretaries’ recommendations, with Shri K F Rustamji, IP serving as its first chief and founding father. BSF was initially established in 1965 with 25 Bns, and as time went on, it was extended in accordance with the needs of the country to combat militancy in Punjab, J&K, and North.
- BSF contributes its personnel every year for UN Missions.
- During the Kargil conflict 1999, the BSF remained on the heights of the mountains and defended the integrity of the country with all the might at its command in unison with the Army.
- BSF personnel have been performing Internal Security Duty in Manipur for the last 10 years and have been successfully fighting insurgency in those areas.
- During the earthquake in Gujarat on 26th January 2001, the BSF was the first to reach out to help the distressed people.
- The BSF is handling the security issues on the famous Kartarpur Corridor.
- BSF is deployed at various ICP and LCS on Borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Information on BSF committee:
On April 20, 1965, the Emergency Committee of the Cabinet convened under the direction of the prime minister at the time, Lal Bahadur Shastri, to consider the role of the police in border protection. A plan for the future BSF was presented on May 17 during a meeting between the Union Home Minister, the Union Defense Secretary, and the Chief of Army Staff. The requirement to consolidate all border patrolling police units into one under federal authority was one of the most significant ideas. The right responsibilities, command structures, equipment, and training were also examined. The federal government will henceforth be responsible for border protection, state home ministers decided at a meeting on June 6-7.
Who all are included in BSF?
25 border battalions of the state police forces were combined to form the BSF. This new force included five of the 12 India Reserve Battalions. The CRPF Act was first used to create the BSF. BSF Regulations were included in the Border Security Force Act of 1968, which was enacted by Parliament. The safeguarding of the border between India and Pakistan was the unique job.
