India-based Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) is a coal producer. After India’s coal mines were nationalized, the firm was established in 1975. Almost all of the 414 coal mines in the Raniganj Coalfield that were nationalized at the time fell under the control of ECL. The number of mines was reduced to about 123 mines. 21 million tonnes were produced from these mines in 1973–1974; 20.744 million tonnes came from underground mines, while the remaining amount came from hand quarries. In 2014–15, 18.23% of production came from underground mines, down from 98.49% at the time of nationalization. The modernization of underground mining technology is the main concern. In 2014–15, the underground mines produced (in million tonnes) using the following technologies: continuous miner (1.397), mechanized bord and pillar (5.335), mechanized longwall (including road header), and traditional board and pillar (0.539).
