Indian Institute of Spices Research

The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Kozhikode (Calicut) a constituent body of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is a major Institute devoted to research on spices. In 1976, it started as a Regional Station of the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasaragod engaged in research on spices.

A National Research Centre for Spices was established in 1986 with its headquarters at Kozhikode, Kerala by merging the erstwhile Regional Station of CPCRI at Kozhikode and Cardamom Research Centre at Appangala, Karnataka. Realising the importance of Spices Research in India this Research Centre was upgraded to the Indian Institute of Spices Research on 1st July 1995.

The laboratories and administrative offices of the institute are located at Chelavoor (50m above MSL), 11 km from Kozhikode, Kozhikode District, Kerala on the Kozhikode-Wyanad road (NH 212) in an area of 14.3 ha.

A major step in the initiation of sustained research on spices was the launching of the All India Coordinated Spices and Cashew Improvement Project (AICSCIP) at Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) at Kasaragod, Kerala in 1971 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Later the ICAR felt the need to intensify research on spices and established a Regional Station of CPCRI at Kozhikode, Kerala in 1975, exclusively for conducting research on spices by the ICAR. The Regional Station was upgraded as the National Research Centre for Spices (NRCS) in 1986 by merging with the Cardamom Research Centre of CPCRI at Appangala, Karnataka as its regional station. The NRCS was further elevated to the present Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in 1995.
