About Company

Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited(NLC India Ltd)

NLC India Limited (NLC), originally known as Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited, is a centrally-run public sector organization that reports to Hari JP at the Indian government’s Ministry of Coal. It produces roughly 30 million tonnes of lignite a year from opencast mines in the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, respectively, at Neyveli and Barsingsar. Pithead thermal power plants with an installed capacity of 3640 MW use lignite to generate energy. A 1000 MW coal-fired thermal power plant is part of its joint venture. Recently, it has expanded into the production of renewable energy, installing a 1404 MW solar power plant to generate electricity from photovoltaic (PV) cells and a 51 MW wind farm to generate electricity. The Indian government-owned it entirely when it was founded in 1956. In order to list its shares on stock exchanges where they may be exchanged, a tiny amount of its equity was sold to the public. When a ‘brown material’ erupted out with water in Rao Bahadur M. Jambulingam Mudaliar’s 620-acre private farm artesian well in 1934, the lignite deposit was unintentionally discovered. He moved quickly and made contact with the British Raj at the time, who dispatched geologists to Neyveli. Later, it was determined to be ‘Lignite’. He offered up a sizable section of the vast land bank for soil investigation. He worked hard and gave the Madras government his 620 acres of property.

For 62 years, NLC has led the nation in the energy industry, producing the majority of the nation’s lignite and a sizeable portion of its thermal electricity. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister, formally opened it in 1956.

NLC operates four opencast lignite mines with a total capacity of 30.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Neyveli and Barsingsar; Six lignite pithead thermal power stations with an aggregate capacity of 3640 MW – at Neyveli and Barsingsar; and a 1000 MW coal based thermal power Station at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu through its subsidiary, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), a joint venture between NLC and TANGEDCO (equity participation in the ratio of 89:11).
