Steel Authority of India

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is one of the largest steel-making companies in India and one of the Maharatnas of the country’s Central Public Sector Enterprises.

SAIL produces iron and steel at five integrated plants and three special steel plants, located principally in the eastern and central regions of India and situated close to domestic sources of raw materials. SAIL manufactures and sells a broad range of steel products.

Located in New Delhi, India, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is a central public sector organization. It is owned by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, and would have a fiscal year 2022–2023 revenue of US$13 billion ($105,398 crore). SAIL was founded on January 24, 1973, and as of March 1, 2023, it employed 59,350 people. It is the largest government-owned steel producer, producing 18.29 million metric tons of steel annually. By 2025, the company’s hot metal production capacity is anticipated to reach a level of 50 million tonnes annually.

SAIL runs and owns three special steel mills in Salem, Durgapur, and Bhadravathi in addition to five integrated steel plants in Bhilai, Rourkela, Burnpur (Asansol), Durgapur, and Bokaro. In Chandrapur, it also has a ferroalloy facility. The PSU is undergoing a significant expansion and modernization initiative as part of its worldwide ambitions, modernizing and constructing new facilities with a focus on cutting-edge green technologies. SAIL is one of India’s public sector organizations that is expanding the quickest, according to a recent poll. In Ranchi, Jharkhand, the PSU also maintains an R&D Center for Iron & Steel (RDCIS) and a Center for Engineering.

The Hindustan Steel Limited (HSL), which was founded on January 19, 1954, is where SAIL gets its start. At first, it was intended to control a single factory that was developing in Rourkela.

The Iron and Steel Ministry completed the preparatory work for the steel plants in Bhilai and Durgapur. With effect from April 1957, Hindustan Steel also assumed management and control of these two steel factories. New Delhi served as the registered office initially. In July 1956, it relocated to Calcutta, and in December 1959, it finally settled in Ranchi.

On January 29, 1964, Bokaro Steel Limited (Bokaro Steel Mill), a new steel business, was established with the goal of building and running the Bokaro steel mill. By the end of December 1961, the 1 MT stages of the steel plants in Bhilai and Rourkela were finished. Following the inauguration of the Wheel & Axle facility, the 1 MT phase of the Durgapur Steel facility was finished in January 1962. HSL increased its crude steel production from 1.58 MT in 1959–60 to 1.6 MT. After the Wire Rod Mill was put into service, the second phase of the Bhilai Steel Plant was completed in September 1967. The Tandem Mill, the final unit of the 1.8 MT phase of Rourkela, and the 1.6 MT phase of Durgapur Steel were both commissioned in February 1968. After the Furnace in SMS was commissioned, the Plant was finished in August 1969. Thus, the total crude steel production capacity of HSL was increased to 3.7 MT in 1968–1969 and then to 4 MT in 1972–1973 with the completion of the 2.5 MT stage at Bhilai, 1.8 MT at Rourkela, and 1.6 MT at Durgapur. In 1978, IISCO was acquired as a subsidiary, and in 2006, the two companies amalgamated.
